Swami Vishnu Tirth Maharaj

Swami Vishnu Tirth Maharaj was born in a place called Jazzar, in the District of Rohtak, Haryana, India as Munilal Swami. Since his childhood, he was spiritually inclined. Later, when he was leading a hostel life as a student in his college, he had a divine experience which further developed and strengthened his spirituality. One night, while he was sleeping on the roof, he saw a huge circle of fire coming towards him. This ring of fire entered into his body and vanished. He subsequently felt an inebriating sensation coupled with spontaneous movements of the body and regulation of breath, a sure sign that he had achieved a high degree of spiritual arousal.

Early Life and Education

Munilal went on to continue his studies, clearing matriculation examinations, staying for some time in Nagpur with his uncle where he passed graduation and finally went on to take a teacher's post at Bilaspur in Madhya Pradesh, after marrying, succeeded in clearing the post-graduate classes and got his LL.B from Aligarh University. He thereafter joined as a practicing Advocate at Ghaziabad, Distt. Meerut.

Though he had an established career as a lawyer, his spiritual tendencies always predominated. He was attracted to holy men's teachings in search of an explanation for the strange happenings he had experienced. His in-depth study of Indian scriptures and yoga gave the final touch to his desire for spiritual growth. His professional life was not suitable for his innately spiritual nature.

Spiritual Life

It was in Ghaziabad that Munilal came to know one Judge Mehra, a disciple of Shri Yogananda Maharaj. Having come to know about Shri Yoganandaji Maharaj, Munilal wrote to him and got a promising reply. By this time, the personal life of Munilal had undergone a sea change - his wife had died, his children were all married and settled. This had released him from his obligatory familial commitments, and thus began a journey of disentanglement from worldly attachments.

It was the year 1933 that saw Munilal's encounter at Swargashram, in Rishikesh, with Shri Yogananda Maharaj and that led to a turning point within his life-receiving initiation under the Shaktipat system. Munilal undertook many holy place visits toBadrinath and Kedarnath with a view towards greater spiritual experience.

Initiation into Sanyas Name

In the year 1939, there awakened in him a strong feeling to take Sanyas from his Gurudev Shri Yoganandaji Maharaj; Munilal approached Swami Shankar Purushottam Tirtha Maharaj of Benaras to initiate him to Sanyas. He thus initiated Munilal to Sanyas as Swami Vishnu Tirth Maharaj with due ceremonies on the banks of the Ganges at Mohan Ashram at Haridwar.

Later, Swami Vishnu Tirth Maharaj visited Indore and later stayed at Dewas and founded the Narayan Kuti Sanyas Ashram. This marked the beginning of his active involvement in spreading the message of Shaktipat.

Love for the Ganges and Yoga Shri Pith

Swami Vishnu Tirth Maharaj was extremely fond of the Ganges and therefore used to spend two months every year in Rishikesh, near the holy waters of the Ganges. The Ganges represents the spiritual currents of India to which he was attached with a deep sense of devotion.

In 1965, a spiritual center was built in Rishikesh by his disciples, which came to be called the Yoga Shri Pith. It was a hub of spiritual learning and Shaktipat initiation, continuing the work he did in guiding seekers toward spiritual enlightenment.
